Step Three

Psychological assessment
and treatment

Some individuals may wish to obtain a detailed assessment of what they are experiencing along with a corresponding treatment plan. Through a structured clinical interview and validated assessment tools, your psychologist will work with you to complete either a rapid or comprehensive assessment based on your needs. Treatment can then be offered based on the assessment results and recommendations.

Other individuals are looking to develop an individualized treatment plan and begin psychotherapy (without a standalone assessment). Our treatment approaches are backed by strong research support and include cognitive and behavioural therapies and motivational interviewing, applied flexibly for a range of presenting issues.

  • A psychologist is a regulated health professional. Psychologists at Recovery Paths each have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and have extensive training in treating complex clinical issues, including co-occurring addiction and mental health problems; research; and various forms of psychotherapy and psychological assessment. A registered psychotherapist is also a regulated health professional. Registered psychotherapists have a master’s-level degree or graduate diploma education, and practice psychotherapy. • Psychotherapy is not a first-line treatment for Opioid Use Disorder; only medications for Opioid Use Disorders are recommended as a primary form of treatment. Psychotherapy involving Motivational Interviewing and relapse prevention has been found to be helpful as adjunct treatments (i.e., provided together with pharmacological treatments).

  • For many mental health and addiction challenges for which people seek therapy, research has demonstrated that virtual and in-person services are equally effective. In some instances, based on the severity of a problem or a person’s therapy goals, in-person services may be advised. The psychologists at Recovery Paths would inform you if this was their professional opinion after learning about your situation, symptoms, and needs.

Some people may have or develop a preference for either virtual or in-person therapy. If you feel like virtual therapy is not a fit for you at any time after receiving services from us, we will explore options with you that may better suit your needs.
